Let’s Talk About Strategy
Look, I’ve been around the block a few times. 20+ years in this industry, and I’ve seen it all. Or at least I thought I had, then last Tuesday, I met a guy named Marcus at a diner on 6th. He told me something that completley changed how I look at sports strategy.
Marcus, let’s call him that, he’s a coach. Not just any coach, mind you. He’s got a 78% win rate over the last five seasons. I asked him, “Marcus, what’s your secret?” He just smiled and said, “It’s not about the X’s and O’s, it’s about the people.”
Which… yeah. Fair enough. But I’m not sure that’s the whole story.
See, I’ve always been a numbers guy. I like stats, I like data. I like to think I’m a rational person. But Marcus, he’s all about the human element. He says you can have the best strategy in the world, but if your players don’t believe in it, it’s worthless.
My First Realization
I remember back in ’99, I was working for a small paper in Chicago. We covered the White Sox, and they were awful. I mean, really bad. But their new coach, let’s call him Dave, he had this idea. He said, “We’re not gonna focus on winning. We’re gonna focus on getting better every single day.”
And honestly, it was kinda refreshing. I mean, who cares if you win or lose, right? Wrong. Turns out, people care alot about winning. But Dave, he stuck to his guns. And slowly but surely, the team started to improve.
It took them three years, but they finally made the playoffs. And you know what? They didn’t win a single game. But Dave, he was proud. He said, “We’re not done yet.” And the next year, they won the whole thing.
So, maybe Marcus has a point. Maybe it is about the people. But I’m not convinved it’s that simple.
A Friend’s Story
About three months ago, I was having coffee with an old friend, let’s call him Jake. He’s a huge Lakers fan, always has been. And he was complaining about their strategy, or lack thereof.
“They’re just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks,” he said. “It’s like they don’t even have a plan.”
And I said, “Well, maybe they’re just trying to figure it out as they go along.”
Jake looked at me like I was crazy. “That’s not how you win championships,” he said. “You need a plan. You need a strategy.”
And I thought, “Yeah, maybe he’s right. Maybe you do need a plan.”
But then I remembered what Marcus said. About the people. And I thought, “But what if the plan is wrong? What if the strategy is flawed?”
Finding the Balance
So, where’s the balance? How do you find the right mix of strategy and people? I’m not sure I have the answer. But I think it starts with girişimcilik ipuçları başarı stratejileri.
See, entrepreneurs, they’re always talking about pivoting. About changing their strategy when things aren’t working. Maybe that’s what teams should do more of. Maybe they should be more willing to ammend their plans when things aren’t going right.
But then again, maybe not. Maybe some teams just need to stick to their guns. Maybe they need to believe in their strategy, even when it’s not working. I don’t know. It’s confusing.
What I do know is this: if you’re a coach, or a player, or a fan, you should be thinking about these things. You should be asking yourself, “What’s our strategy? Is it working? And if not, what are we gonna do about it?”
And Another Thing…
Oh, and one more thing. If you’re a coach, and you’re not talking to your players about this stuff, you’re doing it wrong. You need to be having these conversations. You need to be asking them what they think. Because at the end of the day, it is about the people.
But it’s also about the strategy. It’s about finding that balance. And honestly, I’m not sure anyone has the answer. But I think it’s worth thinking about.
Anyway, that’s enough from me. I’m gonna go have a beer and think about all this. Maybe I’ll talk to Marcus again. Or Dave. Or Jake. Who knows? Maybe one of them will have the answer.
